The custom scarf design guide

Everything you need to design a scarf that looks great up close and from across the stadium, with no surprises when the box arrives.

Scarf size

The standard team scarf measures 55 × 7 in (140 × 18 cm), plus fringe. It wraps comfortably around the neck and stretches nicely overhead in the stands. Other sizes are available on request, such as a narrower youth scarf or an extra-long version for tifo displays.

Choosing a technique

Four techniques are available, each with its own strengths:

TechniqueColorsBest for
Knit Jacquardup to 3Thick, warm, double-layer knit: the classic stadium scarf.
HD Knit Jacquardup to 7A finer knit gauge for detailed crests and small lettering.
HD Wovenup to 8Tightly woven, crisp edges, light and soft drape.
Sublimated SatinunlimitedFull-color print: photos, gradients, any logo.

In short: warmth and tradition go to the knit, precision to HD woven, photos and gradients to satin. Our knit vs. woven scarves comparison goes deeper.

Choosing colors

A scarf is usually seen from a distance. Contrast matters more than the number of colors:

  • Pair a dark shade with a light one (navy and white, black and gold, maroon and white).
  • Avoid close colors for background and text (red and orange, navy and black): the text becomes unreadable from a few yards away.
  • On a classic knit, limited to three colors, two strongly contrasting colors are often enough.
  • If you have brand guidelines, send your Pantone references: we match them to the closest yarns.

Writing the text

Scarf text should read at a glance. A few rules:

  • Short: about 15 characters on a classic knit, 25 on an HD knit.
  • All caps: easier to read, and the stadium-scarf tradition.
  • One idea per side: team name on one side, a motto or date on the other (on woven and satin).

On a knit scarf, the back repeats the front in reversed colors, so it cannot carry different text. Need ideas? See our 50 scarf slogan ideas.

The best file is a vector file (SVG, AI, EPS or vector PDF). Otherwise, a transparent PNG at least 1,000 pixels wide works. On a knit scarf, the logo is reproduced stitch by stitch, so hairlines and small text disappear. Our scarf configurator shows you that result as soon as you upload, and our designer refines it on your free digital proof. More in our guide to putting a logo on a knit scarf.

Budget and timeline

Price depends on the technique and above all on the quantity: the larger the run, the lower the unit price. Production starts at 50 pieces. Check our custom scarf pricing to estimate your budget, then allow 4–6 weeks after you approve the proof (see production time). Planning to resell? Our team scarf fundraiser guide walks through the math.

Care

  • Knit: hand wash or gentle machine cycle, up to 86°F (30°C), dry flat.
  • HD woven and satin: wash up to 86°F (30°C), no dryer, cool iron on the back if needed.

  • Custom wedding scarves

Custom wedding scarves start at 50 pieces with your names and date: sublimated satin for full color and photos, HD woven for an elegant look, and a knit for a fall or winter wedding. Order at least two months before the big day.

  • How to design a team scarf

To design a team scarf, pick a technique, set two high-contrast colors, keep the text to about 15 characters, add a clean logo, order at least 50 pieces and approve your free digital proof. Production then takes 4 to 6 weeks, so work back from the date you need them.

  • How to wash a knit scarf

Wash a knit scarf in cold or lukewarm water, up to 86°F (30°C), by hand or on the gentle cycle in a mesh bag, then lay it flat to dry. Keep it out of the dryer. Woven and satin scarves follow the same rules, with a cool iron on the back if needed.

  • Knit vs. woven scarves

Knit (jacquard) scarves are thick, warm and reversible, built for cold stands. Woven scarves are thin, crisp and can carry a different design on each side, which suits indoor arenas and detailed logos. HD knit and sublimated satin fill the gaps for multi-color crests and photo prints.

  • Logo on a knit scarf

For a clean logo on a knit scarf, send a vector file (or a PNG at least 1,000 px wide on a transparent background), stay within the technique's color limit and simplify anything thinner than a stitch. Our designer fine-tunes the rest on your free digital proof.

  • Scarf slogan ideas

The best scarf slogans are short, all caps and high contrast: about 15 characters on a classic knit, 25 on an HD knit. Here are 50 ideas sorted by who is wearing the scarf, plus the rules that keep them readable from across the stadium.

  • Team scarf budget

A team scarf budget has four lines: unit price for your technique and quantity tier, options, shipping and any taxes or duties shown on the final quote. Set your sale price before you order, presell to size the run, and you can fund gear, travel or tifo from the margin.
