How a jacquard knit scarf is made

Jacquard is a knitting technique, not a print. The knitting machine carries several colored yarns at once and decides, stitch by stitch, which one shows on the face of the scarf. Your design is literally part of the fabric. That is why a knit scarf still looks sharp after years of tailgates, away trips and trips through the washing machine.

Because the knit is double-layered, the back shows the same design in reverse colors: the background color becomes the text color and vice versa. That two-tone, reversible look is what makes a stadium scarf instantly recognizable, from MLS supporters sections to college student sections.

The double layer also traps air, which is why a knit scarf is noticeably warmer than a printed one. If your season runs into November playoffs, a cold hockey rink or a December bowl game, this is the scarf you want.

Design tips for a clean knit

A jacquard knit works like a low-resolution image: about 36 stitches across the height of the scarf. To get a crisp result:

  • Keep the text short and use capital letters: the team name, a chant, a founding year.
  • Use 2 or 3 strongly contrasting colors, such as a dark background with light lettering. Navy and gold, black and orange, and green and white all read well from across the stadium.
  • Simplify the logo: a crest with bold, solid shapes knits better than a detailed illustration. Our online designer shows you the real stitch-by-stitch result before you order.
  • Think about both ends: a crest or year on each end and a short phrase in the middle is the layout most supporters groups use.

Does your logo have fine detail or small lettering? An HD knit scarf, with a finer gauge, handles it much better.

Who orders custom knit scarves?

The knit jacquard scarf is the natural choice for youth and adult soccer clubs, MLS and USL supporters groups and hockey programs. It works just as well for a team store as for player packs at registration. High schools, booster clubs and college student sections also pick it when they want a warm scarf that lasts for many seasons.

Many groups use it as a fundraiser: at 50 pieces or more, the per-scarf price leaves a healthy margin when you sell at games. Check the full breakdown on our custom scarf pricing page.

Guide

Helpful reading

  • How to wash a knit scarf

Wash a knit scarf in cold or lukewarm water, up to 86°F (30°C), by hand or on the gentle cycle in a mesh bag, then lay it flat to dry. Keep it out of the dryer. Woven and satin scarves follow the same rules, with a cool iron on the back if needed.

  • Knit vs. woven scarves

Knit (jacquard) scarves are thick, warm and reversible, built for cold stands. Woven scarves are thin, crisp and can carry a different design on each side, which suits indoor arenas and detailed logos. HD knit and sublimated satin fill the gaps for multi-color crests and photo prints.

  • Logo on a knit scarf

For a clean logo on a knit scarf, send a vector file (or a PNG at least 1,000 px wide on a transparent background), stay within the technique's color limit and simplify anything thinner than a stitch. Our designer fine-tunes the rest on your free digital proof.

Frequently asked questions

How many colors can a custom knit scarf have?

Up to 3 yarn colors on a standard knit jacquard, and up to 7 on an HD knit. You choose from our yarn color chart, and we match your Pantone (PMS) references as closely as possible on the digital proof.

Can I have different text on the front and back?

Not on a knit jacquard: the back is always the reverse-color mirror of the front. For two different messages, choose an HD woven or a sublimated satin scarf, where the two sides are made separately and sewn together.

Will my detailed logo work on a knit scarf?

The knit grid simplifies very fine details. Your free digital proof shows the real result, and if the logo loses too much clarity we will recommend the HD knit instead.

How do I wash a knit team scarf?

Hand wash or machine wash cold (86 °F / 30 °C max) on a gentle cycle, then lay flat to dry. Acrylic does not shrink, and since the colors are knitted in, they will not bleed or fade.

Are knit scarves warm enough for winter games?

Yes. The double-layer knit is the warmest option we make, which is why it is the go-to for outdoor soccer in late fall, cold night games and hockey rinks.
