How to design a team scarf: a 7-step game plan from sketch to delivery

To design a team scarf, pick a technique, set two high-contrast colors, keep the text to about 15 characters, add a clean logo, order at least 50 pieces and approve your free digital proof. Production then takes 4 to 6 weeks, so work back from the date you need them.

Designing a team scarf comes down to seven decisions: technique, colors, text, logo, pattern, quantity and timing. You can make all of them in the online scarf configurator, which shows a live preview and price, then a designer turns your draft into a free digital proof within 24 hours. Here is the order that saves the most back-and-forth.

Before you start: who signs off, and by when?

Most scarf projects stall on approvals, not design. Settle two things up front:

  • Who approves the final design. A booster club board, a supporters group’s leadership, a youth club director, an athletic director. Name one person who gives the final yes.
  • The date you need the scarves in hand. Opening day, a home opener, homecoming, senior night, a playoff run. Count back 4 to 6 weeks of production plus a week for the proof, and you have your deadline to submit.

Step 1: pick the technique

The technique sets your limits on colors, text length and logo detail.

  • Classic knit (jacquard): thick, warm, reversible acrylic knit with up to 3 colors. The traditional stadium scarf.
  • HD knit: the same knit on a finer gauge, up to 7 colors, for detailed crests.
  • HD woven: thin, sharp polyester weave with up to 8 colors and a different design on each side.
  • Sublimated satin: printed, unlimited colors including photos and gradients, lightest and most affordable.

Playing outdoors in November? Go knit. Indoor arena or an early-fall game in the South? Woven or satin will be more comfortable. Our knit vs. woven scarves comparison covers the trade-offs in detail.

Step 2: set your colors

Choose the background first, then the text color, then the pattern accents. You pick from 16 yarn colors (black, white, gray, red, maroon, orange, yellow, gold, green, forest green, sky blue, royal blue, navy, purple, pink and brown), matched to your Pantone references on the proof.

  • Contrast beats quantity. White on navy or gold on black reads from the upper deck. Yellow on white or navy on black does not.
  • Check the back. On a knit scarf, the reverse side is the negative of the front, with the colors swapped. Make sure you like both.

An optional edge stripe in a separate color frames the whole design.

Step 3: write the text

Keep it short: about 15 characters on a classic knit, 25 on an HD knit, spaces included. All caps knit more cleanly than lowercase. Your team name, city or group name usually does the job better than a full sentence.

Upload your logo to the configurator: the background is removed automatically, and each detected color can be reassigned to a yarn. For the cleanest result:

  • send a vector file (SVG, AI, EPS, PDF) or a PNG at least 1,000 px wide on a transparent background;
  • drop hairlines and tiny text, which the knit will smooth out;
  • make sure you have the rights to the mark (school and pro team logos are licensed).

Step 5: choose a pattern

The pattern dresses the ends of the scarf. Four starting points are available, from bold color blocks and classic stripes to a checkerboard or a solid field that puts the text and logo up front. Stripes feel traditional; a solid background feels modern and clean.

On knit scarves, the stitch-by-stitch preview shows exactly how the pattern and lettering will be knitted.

Step 6: add finishing options

Fringe is included on knit scarves and optional on woven and satin. You can also add:

  • an embroidered logo, for a raised, premium detail;
  • a woven label, handy if you resell the scarves;
  • individual poly bags, for giveaways and merch tables;
  • rush production, at 20% on top of the order total.

Per-piece prices for each option are on the custom scarf pricing page.

Step 7: set the quantity, then request your proof

The minimum is 50 pieces per design, in the standard 55 × 7 in (140 × 18 cm) size. Start from your roster or membership count, add a cushion for new members and game-day sales, then test the next tier up in the configurator: a few extra scarves sometimes cost less than the smaller order.

When the design looks right, send a quote request. Your design travels with the form, so there is nothing to re-enter. A designer then prepares your free digital proof within 24 business hours, with unlimited revisions. Nothing is produced until you approve it in writing, and production then takes 4 to 6 weeks (see production time).

Common mistakes

  • Too much text for the technique, which shrinks the letters.
  • Low contrast between text and background.
  • A blurry logo pulled from a website or social media.
  • Forgetting the reverse side of a knit scarf.
  • Ordering too late for a fixed date like homecoming or a home opener.

  • Custom wedding scarves

    Custom wedding scarves start at 50 pieces with your names and date: sublimated satin for full color and photos, HD woven for an elegant look, and a knit for a fall or winter wedding. Order at least two months before the big day.

  • How to wash a knit scarf

    Wash a knit scarf in cold or lukewarm water, up to 86°F (30°C), by hand or on the gentle cycle in a mesh bag, then lay it flat to dry. Keep it out of the dryer. Woven and satin scarves follow the same rules, with a cool iron on the back if needed.

  • Knit vs. woven scarves

    Knit (jacquard) scarves are thick, warm and reversible, built for cold stands. Woven scarves are thin, crisp and can carry a different design on each side, which suits indoor arenas and detailed logos. HD knit and sublimated satin fill the gaps for multi-color crests and photo prints.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for custom team scarves?

50 pieces per design. The unit price then drops at 100, 250, 500 and 1,000 pieces, so it is worth checking the next tier before you settle on a number.

How far ahead should we order for the start of the season?

Allow 4 to 6 weeks of production after you approve the proof, plus a few days for design and sign-off. Eight weeks before the first home game is a comfortable target.

Do I need a designer to make a scarf?

No. The online configurator gives you ready-made patterns, 16 yarn colors and automatic logo cleanup. A designer then finalizes the layout on your free digital proof.

Can our board or members review the design before we order?

Yes. The configurator creates a shareable link, so your board, your chapter leaders or your coaches can weigh in before you send the quote request.
